Best known for her theremin style, composer\/musician Dorit Chrysler also has a prolific recording and performing career as a vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist, producer, and engineer.<\/p>\n

Making her professional vocal debut at Austria\u2018s Opera House Graz at the age of seven, Dorit went on to form her first rock band at thirteen and began working towards her Master\u2018s Degree in Music Science at eighteen.
\nMoving to New York, she was fronting a number of notable bands, including New York rock quartet Halcion.
\nDorit has shared live bills with acts as diverse as Alexander Hacke, Amon Tobin, Dinosaur Jr., Blonde Redhead, Marilyn Manson, Mercury Rev, Oingo Boingo and Echo & The Bunnymen.
\nShe has also collaborated and recorded with artists & producers such as Tocotronic, Elliott Sharp, Judah Bauer (Cat Power), Matt Johnson (The The), Cluster, Chicks On Speed, Electric Indigo, Neon Indian, Gordon Raphael (Strokes, The), Lary Seven, Jason Forrest, Oh Land, Foetus, Ultra Vivid Scene & Gibby Haynes, Trentem\u00f8ller. As a regular at Joe McGinty\u2018s notorious Loser\u2018s Lounge review in New York, Dorit performed «Hey Cowboy\u201c for her idol, the song\u2018s composer Lee Hazlewood. This highpoint of Dorit\u2018s career was topped off by Hazelwood\u2018s compliment that she sang it «better than Nancy (Sinatra).\u201c
\nEmbarking upon a solo career in 2000, Dorit has since performed worldwide, ranging from notorious dives (CBGB) to concert halls (Disney Hall in LA, Lincoln Center NY, Vienna Konzerthaus), festivals (Roskilde Festival, Moog Fest, Coachella) and art events (Venice Biennale, Berlin Biennale, Art Basel, PS1, London Royal Art Academy, St. Petersburg Hermitage, Louisiana Museum).
\nSince 2005 she has toured the US, Japan, Australia, Canada, Brazil, & played Paris, London, Berlin, Belgrade, Stockholm, Helsinki, Mexico City, Reykjavic, Prague, Bukarest, Vienna, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal & New York. After an assortment of film & TV soundtracks, compilations, and singles, Dorit released her her first solo record featuring her theremin in 2004.
\nProduced, recorded, engineered, and performed by the artist herself, \u201cBest of\u201d sold out quickly. In 2005 «TinyThrills\u201c a special Collectors Edition featured a collaboration with Gordon Raphael (Strokes, The).
\nIn 2006, Dorit appeared with Electric Indigo on the Chicks On Speed «Girlmonster\u201c Comp, and on Monika Enterprise, \u201c4WomanNoCry\u201c. She produced a 10 piece Theremin Orchestra Concert at the LA Disney Hall in 2008 and headlined \u201cArt\u2019s Birthday\u201d at Moderne Museet Stockholm. She has written scores for Jesper Just\u2019s films, to be seen in permanent collections at MOMA & the Guggenheim Museum.
\nDorit is an endorsed Moog Artist. In addition to her solo career, she has founded the New York Theremin Society.
\nIn 2011 she self-produced her second album «The Sea of Negligence» that features collaboration with Trentem\u00f8ller and Judah Bauer.
\nDorit has been also performing as thereminist in many Trentem\u00f8ller’s acclaimed live acts.<\/p>\n

What prompted you to\u00a0play theremin?<\/strong><\/p>\n

upon first encounter with the theremin\u00a0I was intrigued by\u00a0its sonic possibilities, its capacity of\u00a0expression and the fact that the instrument deserved to\u00a0be\u00a0taken serious and to\u00a0be\u00a0explored. It\u00a0was simply love at\u00a0first sight<\/p>\n

What were your first feelings when you heard the sounds of\u00a0theremin<\/strong><\/p>\n

i\u00a0call it\u00a0the *Houdini Effect*<\/p>\n

and where did it\u00a0happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n

my\u00a0first impression was encountering a\u00a0theremin at\u00a0a\u00a0friends house. Then i\u00a0saw Clara Rockmore play and was just in\u00a0awe of\u00a0this unique instrument.<\/p>\n

What is\u00a0your musical philosophy and what place it\u00a0occupies a\u00a0<\/strong>theremin?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finding my\u00a0own voice of\u00a0expression through different tools\u00a0\u2014 the theremin can be\u00a0so\u00a0emotional and is\u00a0a\u00a0direct link to\u00a0body and heart. It\u00a0became an\u00a0extension of\u00a0myself.<\/p>\n

Prospects for theremin and its place in\u00a0modern music space\u00a0\u2014 how<\/strong>
\n you see them? For what qualities you value this tool?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u00a0anticipate the theremin being more present and dominant in\u00a0contemporary music in\u00a0days to\u00a0come, a\u00a0new generation of\u00a0players as\u00a0well as\u00a0instruments will demonstrate what the theremin is\u00a0capable of\u00a0\u2014 I\u00a0am very optimistic and excited about this and vow to\u00a0do\u00a0my\u00a0part in\u00a0spreading the word.<\/p>\n

Which manufacturer of\u00a0theremin do\u00a0you prefer?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u00a0have moog theremins and a\u00a0custom made theremin by\u00a0Charlie Hobbs. i\u00a0find each instrument has its own strength and weakness so\u00a0i\u00a0am\u00a0using them all in\u00a0different ways where needed. the new moog there mini surpasses the capacity as\u00a0a\u00a0traditional instrument, i\u00a0am\u00a0curious to\u00a0see how people will end up\u00a0using\u00a0it<\/p>\n
