Also known as Nicolas Huguet, Jimmy has been playing the\u00a0<\/span>theremin since 2006, after discovering it watching science\u00a0<\/span>fiction movies. A multi-instrumentalist drawn towards strange\u00a0<\/span>sounds, he lives in the volcanic area of France, moonlights as\u00a0<\/span>an Exotica and Hawaiian music DJ, is a fan of Polynesian pop\u00a0<\/span>culture and collects tikis, wooden glasses, records and art\u00a0<\/span>modeste. He enjoys sporting a beard, raising snails and practicing\u00a0<\/span>the art of mixology. His first solo album entitled \u201cJimmy\u00a0<\/span>Virani is Beachcombing in Outer Space\u201d came out in 2009.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What prompted you to play theremin? What were your first feelings when you heard the sounds of theremin and where did it happen?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I fell in love with the theremin while watching Ed Wood by Tim Burton. I had heard it before on different bands, but I thought it was nothing but a gadget. Then, I found out it was a real instrument, and it made me want to get one immediatly and try to master it as best as I could.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is your musical philosophy and what place it occupies a theremin?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

My musical philosophy is to get as much pleasure as possible playing music. I don’t want to get too serious, I want to enjoy myself, play with others, meet other musicians… the theremin is a nice conversation starter ! And I love to play it with anybody and on any kind of music, from classical to hawaiian to rock to electro.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prospects for theremin and its place in modern music space — how you see them? For what qualities you value this tool?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I think the theremin blends really nicely on any kind of music.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which manufacturer of theremin do you prefer?<\/span><\/p>\n

Moog music. I have the Big Briar 91-A for playing at home, it’s a fantastic instrument. and the Etherwave for playing at concerts. It’s perfect for travelling and the sound is awesome.<\/span><\/p>\n

What you can recommend for beginners thereminists, or those who are just going to start their way of thereminist?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I recommend playing every day, on the music you like. And have fun, don’t just try to get perfect, you won’t. Have fun playing it, don’t be too serious.<\/span><\/p>\n
