What prompted you to play theremin?
It was happy coincidence which opened up to me whole new horizons of artistic expression. That was in 2007 when I visited one concert in Krems in Austria, where, among other artists that evening played also Dorit Chrysler. I’ve been totally impressed. It was love at first sight and at that moment I knew that I have to play the theremin.
What were your first feelings when you heard the sounds of theremin and where did it happen?
Aside from my previous answer – on many places many times before I even knew what theremin is. Everytime when I listened for example Pere Ubu, Captain Beefheart’s first album, czech avant-garde group The Plastic People of the Universe, etc.. But I took those sounds as so natural part of this music, that I never did some research what instrument creates them.
What is your musical philosophy and what place it occupies a theremin?
If the music is universal language as many says, then we should speak only when we have something to say and don’t talk at all costs. For theremin this is especially true..
Prospects for theremin and its place in modern music space – how you see them? For what qualities you value this tool?
Theremin is unique and very special instrument which has huge possibilities to create very beautiful sounds and whole spectrum of moods, if standing before capable hands. And it doesn’t matter whether those hands belongs to precisious player or to experimentalist. I see prospects for theremin as very auspicious but it is necessary not to be affraid of creating whole new, self-assured and strong music on it. Ofcourse is obvious today, that theremin is more and more popular, but question is if this situation will not lead rather to kind of inflation of this rare instrument. To the creeping loss of the mystery in our age of technology and communication where everything seems to be very easy. Fortunately, there is also small amount of thereminists, who are on really good way.. So who knows, we’ll see:-)
Which manufacturer of theremin do you prefer?
I play alternately on Moog Etherwave Standard and Subscope theremin which are both wonderful instruments and also design my SCHREIBOX models for satisfy my aesthetics skills and better understanding how theremin works inside.
